Shady Pines
I want you to remember
When my eyes are clouded over
And I don’t remember where I am
Or who you are
I want you to remember
That once
You were my world
And I got the tree out every year
And shoveled my own walks
And waited in an anteroom
To edit a vice president’s speech
And met Cesar Chavez
And Gloria Steinem
And made you homemade birthday cakes
That looked like merry-go-rounds and rabbits
And was Phi Beta Kappa
And graduated sixth in my high-school class of 695
And thought my way out of and through
Blizzards and death and poverty
I paved the way for you with all the love I had
So please do not
Please do not forget
I am still in here
Come and see me, knowing
That somewhere in this mess
I am still awake and alive
And waiting
For the golden moments
When you come
And light up my world again
