They say there were runs on chocolate chips
And ingredients for tuna hot dish
Jell-O with fruit cocktail
And Rice Krispie treats
Meat loaf and creamed chipped beef on toast
We cooked – to forget the TV, radio, newspapers
The horror of thousands of empty darkened kitchens
We noticed the too-bright blossoms of hibiscus
The oblivious early flames of fall leaves
Events that went on that had no right to
In the midst of lives snuffed out
Swallowed up in dust and flames
We found ourselves rocking back and forth
The way people do, absently
When they pick up a baby after years
Of not holding one
And go on automatic pilot
Anything, anything to go back
So we retreated to the kitchen
Our bunker, always
In times of stress
Comfort food for battered souls
