moon rabbit

The snow is crystal in the moonlight
Evergreens splayed like black fingers
And across the white sea
Comes the moon rabbit
Looking for castoffs
Sunflower seeds and bread
Small and dark against the snow
Fearless and tentative
The lure of food
Preempts the peril of soundless wings

A flicker of movement
Sends him back beneath the trees
I can sense him there
Poised, nose twitching
Waiting for the threat to pass
Phantom rabbit
I know he sees me too
Here at the window
Admiring his courage
His daring
His carelessness with death
