She rocks the cradle
Patiently, numbly
Knows what has happened, what will be
Meanwhile, the child looks out
With brilliant eyes
A blissful statistic
Beaming with fatal courage
Freeze-framed by the camera

Miles away we weep
Astounded and helpless
Trying to cradle them, mother and child
Wipe away the future and the past
The misery, the want
The cold cruelty to people we don’t know
But recognize, instantly, across the miles

Still, the child smiles
Light of the world
The only resurrection
