to the rescue

Sooner or later
No matter how bad things are
The cavalry comes
The angels swoop in
The medics arrive
The thousands and thousands
Of ordinary heroes
Who flock to disaster
Come armed to the teeth
With good will, humanity
Love and comfort
Always, always
Over and over again
We are reminded
That humankind is, after all
Redeemable
That we are good souls
Despite our constant, confounded stumbling
When the chips are down
We crawl out of our hellholes
Of selfishness and greed
We saddle up old paint
And go riding in ourselves
In a blaze of glory
Having determined that
The Rescue Squad is Us
And then we look around
Startled and a bit pleased
That we are still, apparently
All that is good and bright and true
