The poems

caretaker

So even to the last
You took care of her
Got the deed squared away
The boat papers
The windows and the door frames
The tools picked out that she could use
The woodworking equipment
Of such common and ordinary things
Is true love made
Those last determined, careful efforts
Not to ease your own discomfort
Or even your passing
Nor to wallow in self-pity
But to lay the ground for her
So she would survive
And when she forgets
You make sure
The right tool appears
The right screw rolls out
The document she needs
Suddenly appears on the desk
So that she lives – lives out her days
On your watch
