passage
You waited
As we drove the hour and a half
Come quickly, the nurse said
She’s going – we can tell
But they often wait, you know
They often wait until you come
Fragile as a coil of ash
From the last cigarette
Barely strung together with hope
You are not who you were
And yet you are the same
All those years when it was just
You and me
Just us girls
Your breath slides in and out
Thin thread of life
You wait, pause, think it through
Breathe again
I know without a doubt
They are there, waiting
I can feel them
Feel the warmth
Feel you pass through the portal
I hold you here, light-tethered
And they reach out to pull you through
You glide – never once do we let you fall
I sit in the dark
The shell of you, like a chrysalis, still next to me
World to world, we passed you
From light to light
Loving hands
Waiting on both sides
