giving back the daisies
A little boy in a blue jacket
Holds a single daisy
And looks out at us
With a smile as bright as the sun
Look what I’ve brought you, Mom!
Isn’t this great?
Aren’t I great?!
Isn’t life great?!
The same little boy
Now grown
Weary and fragile
From the struggles
Of a difficult life
Walks out the hospital door
I’ve come to pick him up once more
And he holds a small cup
Full of daisies
Purchased lovingly with his last dime
At the hospital gift shop
Here, Mom
Happy Mother’s Day a little late
No different, really
From the little boy in the blue jacket
Despite overwhelming odds
Still, the same bright, sunny smile
You gave me daisies
And so much more
You gave me life
Compassion and understanding
Hope and persistence
So now I am bringing you back the daisies
For all the darkness in your life
There was so much light
Because I cannot have you close by for a while
I will fill the house with daisies
And remember the sun of your life
And the promise and the love
And the hope ahead
