The poems

first year

The first anniversary of your death
Came with little fanfare
A day with no more pain, no less
Than all the other days
I spent the day with your daughter
And her stepbrother
A funny movie, a visit to the park
She was as normal as any child
Who’s lost her father
And yearns for normalcy
And never quite finds it
I brought out the box of your ashes
A memorial – going to the grave, as it were
But you, like your ashes
Are always with me
I take comfort in the idea
Of no beginning, no end
No birth, no death
Only continuation
It makes some sense of the world
That you were here before I saw you
And will always be here
No need to grieve
For what has not been lost
Even so
I miss the hugs, the laughter
The sound of your voice in the kitchen
The noise as you came up the stairs
The shell was how I saw you
Without it, I have trouble
Getting my bearings
So each day is new
Trying to figure out
What the hell happened
And how I will live with it
