bruise

Grief lodges like a wound
The brain -- to comprehend
The heart -- to survive
Build a cushion around it
For the first few days
Weeks months
The swelling softens the pain
But when it subsides
And the wound lies unprotected
The things you couldn’t stand
To remember
Suddenly are revealed
The pain is ravaging
The details of the death
Agony of the first days
The bitter sweetness
Of the whole life remembered
Are exposed
And you deal with
The entirety of loss
Unbuffered
