wounds

We wend our way up the shore
Battered and wounded
From shouting in the night
Bewildered, terrified
By the brutality
Of our emotions
Even as we drive
We feel the healing
The barbs and thorns
Arrows, daggers, swords
Of defensive love
Judgmental tenderness
Arrogant unselfishness
Conditional commitment
Self-righteous error
Fall away in the wind
The lake looms over the hill
And the tears come
(Mine outside, yours inside)
And we keep driving
Because that’s what it’s all about, of course
You keep driving
You just keep driving
The more you drive
The wind and the lake
Trees and blue sky
The warmth of the autumn sun
Pull the claws and teeth
Out of the jagged wounds
And we start to heal
All over, once again
And we don’t die after all
We learn
