knives
Interesting to see how close
Death is sometimes
A sharp knife, pills
The handgun
Clouded ice-tea waters beneath the bridge
A straight-line wind
Drunk driver
It is comfortingly
Disconcertingly close
In the wink of an eye
Every pain gone
Every disappointment
Every pain to come
But they say
"Love as if you've never been hurt"
"Dance as if no one is watching"
Pretend you are permanent
Keep track of who you hurt
Hold on for the ones who follow
For your demise is theirs
And you put back the knife
The pistol in its holster
You drive the car home
Without incident
Even if you think you've been
On numb so long
You can't remember hurt
You do
And you live with it
