scales

After the dance
(A dozen little girls
In green and orange and yellow
Copacabana outfits,
Giggling and adorable)
You come to Grandma’s house
And shed sparkling green sequins
From your costume
And after you go home
And the house is calm
And unpleasantly quiet
As it always is
After grandchildren leave
I pick up each and every sparkle
Tiny scales from my little fish
Swimming through my life
Bringing the warm blue Caribbean sea
