first blessing
I watch you
Through the glass of the nursery
Bent over your new baby boy
You were the first to hold him
As soon as he entered the new world
Brought him around the drape
For his first words with his tearful mom
Then, competently, tenderly
Carried him down the hall
Adoring grandparents in tow
For pokes and proddings
Shots and eye drops
And while you allowed the nurses
To do their work
You never once let go
Kept your finger in his tiny fist
Leaned over and soothed him
Kept constant watch
And, finally, left alone
As he lay, quiet and listening
You talked and wondered over him
I would have given anything
To hear what you said
I do know
He will not forget
