bridge
Funny how the phone calls fanned out
Are you there? Are you OK?
Are you coming home to me?
Were you on the bridge?
Where were you, what time,
How close were you
To being lost to me forever
There but for the grace of God ….
Frantic calls to make sure we’re OK
But none of us are OK
13 dead and many hurt and missing
And the worst – we can see
Cars pancaked on the bottom
And we know someone is down there
Somebody’s baby, somebody’s partner
Somebody’s family
Somebody we love
It doesn’t matter
If they’re mine or yours
It is an awful world
When planes fly into buildings
And waves devour villages
And roads rise up and swallow people
Who did nothing more
Than climb into their cars
And drive home
An ordinary day
Suddenly full of heartbreak
And we call each other once again
Just checking … I love you …
When are you coming home ….
